My series of dolls is titled, ‘Women of Colour”, and through these dolls I have tried to explore the notion that not everything in life is monochrome. We are all complex and so is the world around us, and we all have many shades of ourselves and it is these shades and subtlety and nuanaces and flaws which make us interesting. This meaning differs from the political term ‘Woman of Colour’, which is used to refer to women from black and ethnic minorities. I have created dolls in many colours, and I hope that they transcend, embrace and hold the same unifying sentiment despite their visual differences. If my dolls have a political meaning, I believe it is one of unity and togetherness and as a symbol of strength and hope. I would like to think that any person can take what they want and need from my dolls.
